Houston, Texas: PG Contemporary is pleased to announce a joint exhibition featuring two highly regarded, Houston-based artists Hillevi Baar and J Hill. The exhibition marries the two artists’ individual shows titled Ambrosia and New Sculpture with Implied Volume, respectively; both of which will be the first solo show for each artist at PG Contemporary. Baar’s work will be located in the main gallery space, whereas, Hill’s work will be in the adjoining project space. The opening reception will be held at the gallery on Friday, September 28 from 6-9pm, with both artists in attendance.
Born in 1963 in Port of Spain, Trinidad in the West Indies, Hillevi Baar resides and works in Houston, Texas. She is known for her rendering and her intricate and elaborate three-dimensional drawings. Generally, her subject matter addresses the nature of beauty, often incorporating imagery from the natural world. Ms. Baar received her Bachelor’s and Master of Arts from Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas. Most recently her work has been featured in the Museum of Art in Islip, New York and group shows in Texas at DBerman Gallery in Austin and PG Contemporary in Houston.
She has twice received an Artist Fellowship Grant Award. Ms. Baar is in public and private collections that include the Art League’s 2012 Texas Patrons of the Year Scott and Judy Nyquist; Hilton Hotels; ConocoPhillips Corporation; Vinson & Elkins; Locke Lord Bissell Liddell; and Gaylord Hotels. Her esteemed recognition as one of the first artists to transform drawings into three dimensional experiences has led to numerous public installations across the United States.
Originally from Cody, Wyoming, J Hill is a self-described multidisciplinary artist and arts educator based in Houston, TX. The content of his artwork tends to be rooted in history or social structure. As such he has participated in gallery exhibits and community based projects using materials and techniques as varied as traditional sculptural media, internet based radio, video, audio projection and community performances. Mr. Hill has participated in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally; and has received multiple grants and awards, such as Artadia, Houston, The Idea Fund, Houston and HAATX Artist Fellowships. His work is included in collections such as the Discovery Green Park Conservancy; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Chaney Collection.
As an artist whose work is rooted in social context, J Hill considers his role as an educator and his activities in arts and community organizations as a natural extension of his creative work. He serves on the Faculty of and is currently the Sculpture Department Head for the Glassell School of Art, at the MFA, Houston and University of St. Thomas.
