Artist’s Statement

Mark Perry

Currently I am making abstract landscapes derived from explorations with paint. My history is landscape painting and although I refer to them as abstract, they have a landscape quality. Categorizing the work for me, is a helpful place to start, finding order in the chaos.

During my process I wear a few hats, the adult, the experimental inquisitive one, the child, usually all behave. The child wishes to do everything with a five second attention span. The challenge is to stay focused on the abstract when I suddenly start thinking figuratively. When there is strife I find the best solution is to continue till there is some resolution. Striving to keep negative energy out of the studio, if it finds its way in, work it out hopefully using it to my advantage.

Of my different approaches to constructing a painting one I repeatedly turn to is the concept of layers, what is in front, behind, or on top. These sequences can assist in piecing together an interesting composition. Making decisions and/or leaving things to chance is my delicate balance.
